Dimethyl fumarate is an enoate ester resulting from the formal condensation of both carboxy groups of fumaric acid with methanol. Used for treatment of adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. It has a role as an immunomodulator and an antipsoriatic . It is an enoate ester, a methyl ester and a diester. It derives from a methanol and a fumaric acid. Dimethyl Fumarate has also been applied as a biocide in furniture or shoes to prevent growths of mold during storage or transport in a humid climates.
The structural formula of DMF is as follows: The method of preparation offered by this invention is: using maleic anhydride (or maleic acid) and methanol as raw material, they will react with each other under a definite condition in the presence of concentrated hydrochloric acid. By process for synthesis of DMF, only one step reaction is required. The raw materials are available easily and cheaply, the operation is simple. The yield of the product is high and its purity may reach over 99%. This method can be easily used in commercial production. The said product is a better antifungus agent. It provides antifungus effect on foodstuff, feed, cosmetic and other commercial products.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is a fumaric acid ester registered for the treatment of relapsing‐remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). It induces protein succination leading to inactivation of cysteine‐rich proteins.
