Methoxy propanol, also commonly known as propylene glycol monomethyl ether is a colorless solvent that is commonly used in printing and writing inks and in paints and coatings. It is represented as C4H10O2. It dissolves in water easily and is highly flammable solvent. It has been estimated that around 500,000 MT of methoxy propanol is manufactured annually. China is one of the top exporters of the product.
The most common way of manufacturing methoxy propanol is using methanol and 1.2-methoxy propane using a catalyst. The products are then subjected to distillation, after which we receive methoxy propanol.
Methoxy propanol is primarily used in the manufacture of propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate.
It is used in printing and writing inks.
It is also used in industrial and commercial products like paints, coatings, varnishes, resins and adhesives.
It is often used as cleaning agent in electronics industry.
